What is image compression and why does it matter?
Image compression reduces the file size of a photo or graphic by discarding data that the eye cannot easily detect. A raw photo from a modern smartphone can exceed 5 MB. For sharing on WhatsApp, emailing, or uploading to a website, you want that file well under 500 KB — or even under 100 KB — without the image looking noticeably different to a viewer.
ToolJiffy's image compressor uses the browser-image-compression library, which applies JPEG, PNG, and WebP encoding passes entirely inside your browser tab. Your photo never travels to a server — it is compressed on your own CPU. This means the tool works even if you are offline (after the page first loads), and there is no risk of a third party accessing your images.
How to use the image compressor
Set your desired quality level (70–80% is a good starting point for photos) and a maximum width if you want to scale the image down as well. Tips for best results
For photographs, 75–85% quality retains full visual fidelity for most purposes. For graphics with flat colours or text (screenshots, infographics), PNG is already losslessly compressed — try 60–70% quality or convert to WebP for better results.
